At the Heart of Portugal
Viseu is my beloved hometown and has been considered the
“Best City to live in Portugal” many times!
This is because Viseu is a peaceful, modern city that still maintains an ancient charm. Even though it's not such a popular tourist destination, the truth is that Viseu was essential for the birth of Portugal, and it's home to many of the country's myths!
If you want to have a genuine piece of History away from the crowds, then Viseu is the perfect destination!

This is the most complete and entertaining tour you can get in Viseu!
Unlike what many people assume, Viseu was crucial for the creation of Portugal - some historians even defend that the country’s first King, D. Afonso Henriques, was born here! This tour starts precisely in the Cathedral, which was the home to his mother, D. Teresa, and his advisor, Saint Theotonius.
From the Cathedral we’ll go to other iconic places, such as the Market 2 de Maio and the Medieval Streets, exploring each corner calmly until we arrive at Cava de Viriato, Portugal’s most intriguing archaeological monument that remains a mystery until today…
This tour will give you insight into Viseu’s 2500 years of History and some surprises for your (literal) delight!

Recommendations for your Tour

WEATHER
Viseu is located in the interior of Portugal and is surrounded by many mountains, so the weather is usually drier and colder than by the seaside.
Nonetheless, the temperatures tend to be friendly throughout the seasons, and full sunny days are common even at the peak of Winter.
I recommend you dress in layers and bring sunglasses. Check Portugal’s official Weather Institute website in advance to make sure you’re prepared.
TRANSPORTATION
- BUS All the bus lines have their departures and arrivals on the Avenida 25 de Abril, next to Viseu’s City Hall. From that to the Cathedral is only a 7-minute walk via Dr. Luíz Ferreira Street.
You can check the schedules on Viseu’s City Hall website by searching Tarifários e Horários.
- CAR There are plenty of paid car parks around Viseu’s center. Most of them are owned by Saba, so check their website to see all options. Another alternative is to park in the shopping mall Fórum’s underground parking, which is free for two hours.
If you prefer a free and open parking space, my suggestion is that you leave your car in the Feira Semanal area, which is only 10 minutes on foot from Rossio. Please note that the Feira Semanal happens on Tuesdays, so the area is closed for parking on that day!
- TAXIS Most cabs charge around 5 - 7€ from the urban limits of Viseu to the city's centre. Uber and Bolt are also available in most areas.
